Dove Hunting with a Woman – Hunting season in Colorado and Alaska

Every year, for as long as I can remember my stepdad has began harvesting the fields for the next big dove shot.  It never ceases to amaze me how shooting an innocent little bird can keep grown men occupied for atleast a good weekend.  There are several fields the men line up in, trying to blend in with their surroundings, careful not to stand out so the kill won’t be able to spot them.  I’ve tried myself to shot, but can not even get remotely close to this little speck that lies in the sky.  One thing that I could never commit to if I had ever been so lucky to hit one would be to put it in my pocket.  I mean seriously, why would you ever put a bloody bird in your pocket?  I’ve practiced don’t get me wrong.  I’ve worked on shooting just a standing still decoy, although I swear it moves every time I fire the gun, or so I will continue to believe that until I actually make contact.

With hunting I’ve always believed you shouldn’t kill what you won’t eat.  Although I’ve seen a lot of dove’s shot I’ve never once heard of anyone eating their kill.  I mean really why you would even waste blooding up a good shirt if you not going to eat it.  For that matter, why even waste the bullets, time harvesting the field to attract the doves, or effort spent trying to shoot a flying object.  I hardly see how it’s possible in the first place.  What I can figure is that the men have to spend hours trying to perfect their aim with an animal as small as a dove, and what in the world would drive them to pick a dove in the first place?  A dove seems like such a peaceful creation why try to use it as a moving target?

Although last year I retired from dove shoots, what I will commit to each year is the family cookout to bring the shoot to an end.  It’s always nice when the men bring out a kill from another shoot, deer or turkey, which you can actually eat.  The cookout usually loosens the tension with the men, especially the ones who miss every target for the day.  What I do know about dove hunting, which isn’t much, is that it takes an awful lot of skill, and A LOT more luck to perfect the sport.
